The Gambia Committee on Traditional Practices Affecting the health of women and children, GAMCOTRAP recently concluded a series of community based activities in commemoration of 16 Days of Activism in the Kanifing Municipal area, Niamina East, in the Central River Division and Sibanor, in the Western Division. The celebration took the form of training information campaigns on sexual and reproductive health rights and sensitization on gender based violence and women’s participation in governance.

6th November 2006 - Press Release from GAMCOTRAP

Nyima Sanyang, a 13 year old girl was murdered on Monday. According to family sources, late Nyima had a brawl with her assailant which subsequently led to her untimely death. The tragic incident happened at Sikunda. According to a source, late Nyima climbed on top fence of the primary school during her encounter with her adversary, and thereafter was pushed by her assailant. The source have it that when late Nyima fell down, the fence crumbled and fell on her. At the Police at Mansakonko Police Station have confirmed the story. They said the suspect has been arrested and is presently in Police custody. They said Nyima’s body was transported to Soma Health Centre where she was pronounced dead. The source further stated that the victim’s body was transported to the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH) for a postmortem.

GAMCOTRAP has completed a tour in three regions to meet the Sheroines Against FGM and their Communities in the Upper River Region, Central River Region, Lower River Region. The GAMCOTRAP team led by the Executive Director, Dr. Isatou Touray, visited all the eighteen circumcisers and presented a total of Seventy thousand Dalasis (D70,000) to the remaining seven of the Ex-Circumcisers to complete the AEO project beneficiary who have stopped the practice of Female Genital Mutilation. These re Kumba Damba of Macca Masireh, Mamasa Sinera of Suduwol, Aja Mama Ceesay of Dampha Kunda, Adama Damba of Mabally Koto, Yai Jawneh of Sololo, Sungkanba Damba Kerewan Samba Sireh, and Satang Dansira of Saruja. It could be recalled the rest of the first badge of Sheroines had earlier received similar support from GAMCOTRAP.

 GAMCOTRAP is pleased to welcome you to this important press conference on the ratification of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa. GAMCOTRAP also wishes to take this opportunity to express appreciation and thanks to the Government of the Gambia for taking the bold step to give the women’s Bill full ratification. The protocol popularly known as the MAPUTO PROTOCOL is the regional convention adopted from CEDAW to respond to issues of African Women and their rights.

GAMCOTRAP has been in existence since 1984 and involved in advocacy work on women and children’s right. Its main objectives are to fight harmful traditional practices that are inimical to the health of women and children at the same time promoting the preservation of positive practices that promote the well being of women, children and the family. It has over the years engaged in culturally relevant action research to feed into its advocacy work and planning process. Various target groups are covered in its outreach activities in both urban and rural areas.

News story on GAMOCTRAP Participation at the Feminist Dialogue and World Social Forum, Nairobi, Kenya, 2007 

A GAMCOTRAP delegation that comprised of the Executive director, Dr. Isatou Touray and Programme Coordinator, Amie Bojang Sissoho, recently returned from a series of networking trip in Nairobi, Kenya. The delegation participated at the third Feminist Dialogue forum organized by the International group of Feminist organizations and networks.

GAMCOTRAP completes the second phase of Training of Community Based Facilitators

The Seyfo of Jarra West, Alhajie Yahya Jarjusey commends GAMCOTRAP for its endurance to reach out to rural communities in promoting the rights of women and children. Seyfo Jarjusey made the commendation at the start of a three day training of GAMCOTRAP Community Based facilitators – CBFs Jarra Soma. He advised the CBFs to promote the principles of the organization I promoting and protection the rights of women and children.

 West African women initiate a coalition of Women’s Rights NGO in the Sub-region

A two day consultative meeting of African Women from Seven West African countries to build bridges abd network for effect change to ward protecting the rights of women has concluded at Paradise Suite Hotel on Tuesday. The meeting which was organized by Women AID Collective – WACOL in partnership with Swedish NGO Foundation emphasized the need for Women’s rights Groups to used the regional instrument in Africa to protect and promote the rights of women. The meeting discussed amongst other things challenges and strategies

Media update on the activities of part one of 2007

Since the landmark celebration of the Dropping of the knife in May 2007, GAMCOTRAP had a follow up visit to the Sheroines in their communities. The purpose was to express appreciation to their communities for their support and active participation during the celebration. This was also accompanied by presentation of part two of the Alternative employment opportunity project for those Ex-circumcisers who did not receive theirs during the first phase of the project.

Report by Honourable Nyimasata Sanneh, Board member of GAMCOTRAP Joins Government delegation to a Regional Workshop on FGM in Dakar, Senegal from 12th – 16th October 2008.

GAMCOTRAP joined the Gambian delegation to the Regional Workshop for the abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation held in Dakar, Senegal from the 13th – 16th ctober 2008. UNICEF facilitated the participation of the Gambian delegation led by the Executive Director of the Women’s Bureau, Ida Faye Hydara.

German Embassy Supports Kartong women with over one hundred and four thousand Dalasis through GAMCOTRAP

The German Embassy in Dakar, Senegal through its Banjul office has provided tie and dye materials, gas cookers and deep freezers worth over One hundred and four thousand Dalasis to Kartong Women’s group. The group comprises of women and girls will benefit from the support to improve their economic status and that of their families.

GAMCOTRAP holds Community Training to stop FGM in the Western and Upper River Regions

Over fifty Traditional Birth Attendants and Circumcisers from the five districts of Foni, participated at a three day workshop held in Sibanor, Foni Bintang Karanai. Governor Western Region, Mr. Abdou Badgie welcomed GAMCOTRAP in Foni and said that they are happy that the organization is also engaging the Foni area towards the eradication of female genital mutilation - FGM.

Presentations at training workshops held at Foni and the URR in May 2008

Speaking on the religious misconceptions related to FGM, Oustass Muhamadou Sanuwo reiterated that FGM is not a Quranic injunction and that Hadith associated to FGM are weak and cannot justify the harm the practice causes to women, because Islam does not accept any practice that causes more harm than good to human beings. He reminded participants that the historic myth associated to the wives of Prophet Ibrahim was based on jealousy between co-wives and not for religious reasons.

 SIX ALKALOLU WITNESS SENSITIZATION ON FGM AT BANTANTO

Six Alkalolu, Imams and council of elders were amongst over one hundred women and men who witnessed the training on sexual and reproductive health and the rights of women, in particular, the effects of female genital mutilation organized by GAMCOTRAP at Bantanto village in Central River Region- CRR. They were amongst over one hundred participants from Bantanto, Mabally Koto, Mabally Kuta and Sare Jibel in the CRR.

 US Government Awards Dr. Isatou Touray ‘Woman of Courage 2008

The United State embassy in the Gambia has nominated Dr. Isatou Touray, Executive Director of GAMCOTRAP for the United State government International Award of Woman of Courage 2008. During a luncheon in honour of Dr. Touray on the 21st May 2008, the US Ambassador to the Gambia, His Excellency, Barry L. Wells in presenting the award said the American Secretary of State, Condolesa Rice initiated the award to recognize women who have taken the courage to bring about change in their communities in pursuit of democracy and human rights to guarantee safety and security.

Women Leaders in FONI trained on Female Genital Mutilation

Over twenty women leaders from Foni Jarrol, Bintang Karanai, Bondali and Kansala in the Western Region converged at Bwiam Lodge for a three days training on sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls against harmful traditional practices.

 GAMCOTRAP Conducts Sensitization with Gambians in Catalunya, Spain

GAMCOTRAP in partnership with AMAM - a women’s right organization against female genital mutilation in Spain conducted sensitization meetings in ten villages and towns in Girona, Catalunya district, Spain. The twelve day bridge building visit was an opportunity to create awareness on women and children’s rights, traditional practices, the Spanish government protocol against female genital mutilation in particular.
