Report on UNFPA African Regional Violence Against Women Prevention and Response Strategy Development Workshop 21-25 September 2009 held in Windhoek, Namibia.

Violence Against Women is a violation of human rights. African States are committed to protect and prevent violence against women through legislation and enforcement of laws. Also, NGOs and Civil Society Organizations are called upon to engage in advocacy to eliminate violence against women in communities to protect women and girls.

GAMCOTRAP Completes ten days Community Sensitization activities in the Upper River, Lower River and Foni in the Western Region

The villages of Sabi, Numuyel, Bakadaji, Allunhareh and Gambisara were the target of a five day community sensitization in the Upper River Region. GAMCOTRAP under the NFPA country programme supported through the Department of Information, Population Secretariat, and support from Equality Now, ODAM and NIYO, a Swedish based NGO respectively conducted the awareness creation on female genital mutilation, early marriage and other harmful traditional practices affecting the health of women and children and gender based violence.

Gambian Parliamentarians Challenged to Legislate Against FGM

Every year women die of complications associated to child birth and most of them are related to traditional beliefs and practices that are deeply rooted in communities. These practices like FGM and Early Marriage continue to affect maternal and child health, as well as female sexuality.

Second Public Declaration of the Dropping of the Knife Celebration At Basse, Upper River Region

GAMCOTRAP has worked closely with the communities through an empowerment process to be able to bring about change. Sustained advocacy engaging the duty bearers at the community level has resulted to yet another success story. Following the first Public Declaration against Female Genital Mutilation - FGM by eighteen circumcisers in May 2007, a new badge of Sheroines, 60 Circumcisers and 351 Communities will take part in the second Public declaration against FGM

Brikamaba and surrounding seventeen communities sensitized on Female Genital Mutilation and other harmful traditional practices affecting the Rights of Women and Girls

GAMCOTRAP with support from a Spanish based organization, Yolocamba has embarked on sensitizing Brikamaba and its surrounding seventeen communities in the Central River Region on the effects of female genital mutilation on the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls.
